Lately, I have been reading Carol Dweck’s work on the concept of mindset. This got me thinking about how we can get our students to embrace process of learning new math concepts. I am strongly convinced that Common Core’s Standards for Mathematical Practice should become apart of our culture in establishing a math mindset that endures and invites challenge. The Standards for Mathematical Practice are as follows: 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Right now, this is just a poster in our classroom that I rarely refer to. My goal is make these practices a part of our math mindset. Since these practices are rather abstract for most 5th graders, we will do some work to make these concepts kid-friendly and real to the students. Let’s also make this a part of the math mindset when students are doing homework, or while you’re out shopping and talking to students about real world math concepts. Attached is TED Talk given by the aforementioned Carol Dweck. What are your thoughts? Comment below. Next week is Fall Break here in Decatur! We will be using this week to wrap up skills have been working on. Below is a brief update.
I will be out of the classroom Wednesday and Thursday. The homework will be review for these two days. Math-We have taken Mid-Module Assessments. I am looking forward to seeing how the students have grown since Happy Labor Day Weekend! I hope you all are enjoying your weekend so far. I would like to take this time to introduce our Room Moms for this year.
Stephanie Stach ([email protected]) and Elizabeth Lenhard ([email protected]) have agreed to volunteer as Room Moms for our class. They will soon be contacting you regarding class birthday celebrations and other information very soon. If you are not comfortable with me sharing your email address with our Room Moms, send me an email and I will take your name off of their email list. Feel free to welcome them via email. Have a great rest of the weekend! Eddie |
