Greetings parents! We are off and running and it is exciting! I am proud of the way the students have adjusted and how serious they are about their learning. Our time together has been maximized by student participation in discussions and diligence in completing activities. I'm looking forward to what this week has in store.
Writing Tomorrow we will review the narrative writing rubric before students submit their final draft. We will introduce our next narrative writing topic. We will spend time working through various planning strategies. As a special treat, we will be interviewing a trained screenwriter on what makes a compelling story. ELA Students took a quiz on Friday about the structure of poems. I'll post grades by Tuesday at the latest. This week we will explore point of view in various texts. Social Studies This week we will wrap up our Unit on World War II. We will discuss the WWII battles and their implications. Grades My goal is to post grades between Monday and Tuesday on Google Classroom. I'll send out a notification with instructions on how to check those grades when they have been posted. The quiz we took on Friday will be posted first. The writing grades will be posted later in the week since students will be making their final submissions on tomorrow. What a great week of learning we had! We witnessed history together by watching portions of the Inauguration. We had robust discussions about 3 branches of government. And we even laughed at a few Bernie Sanders memes I found! I am excited and looking forward to this week. Below is a quick overview of what we will be covering this week.
Writing Last week, we explored strategies that can implement to enhance our narrative writing. This week, we will continue to work on the narrative writing pieces that we started on Friday. ELA Last week, we looked at Amanda Gorman's poem and attempted to bring structure to it by adding stanzas. This week, we will continue to explore the text structure of poems. Social Studies Last week, we discussed the three branches of government. This week we will identify various leaders from WWII. Room Mom! Our room mom is Erica Udell! The Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition The Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition is a yearly state-wide writing competition open to any student enrolled in a Georgia public school, grades K-12. Participation is completely voluntary for students, but we hope to get many quality entries! Here's a rundown of how it will work:
Spelling We will take our spelling test on Friday of this week. If you and your student are headed out of town and won't be here on Friday, let me know and I can test your student on Thursday before the Celebration of Learning. Celebration of Learning Our Celebration of Learning is Thursday at 1:00 pm. Send your students in their ugliest holiday/winter sweater or shirt. See you Thursday! Grades Report Cards went home with students yesterday in their Red Communication Folder. You do not have to send them back. After you review your child's progress let us know if you have any questions. Bremen Museum Field Trip Tomorrow we travel to the Bremen Jewish Heritage Museum. We have had class conversations about the seriousness of the World War II and the Holocaust. This experience will deepen the student's understanding of World War to and the implications for the Jewish people. Tybee Forms Yesterday you received a packet of paperwork that needs to be completed for the Tybee Island Field Trip. Please complete and return this packet in to me by Monday, November 18th. The deadline for Tybee Island payments is not until December, 20th. What we're learning! Greetings, Parents! It's been great meeting with you all and setting goals for our students. In this age of emails and text messages, it's great to meet face-to-face. Here are a few things to make note of this week. Hawk Hollow Field Trip Tomorrow, October 22nd, is the walking field trip to Hawk Hollow. We forgot to sent the Bremen field trip forms out instead of this one. Please sign the permission slip for Hawk Hollow and return it tomorrow. Spirit Week This week is Spirit Week here at F.Ave in honor of the Decatur High School Homecoming! Click here to how students can participate in the different days that we have this week! Word Study We have started our Word Study (aka "Spelling) in Reading. Students received a set of words last week. We will work with the same group of words for 2 weeks and test at the end of those 2 weeks. More information to come on Word Study vs Spelling. There are some differences that will be covered in a separate post. Read-a-Thon Read-A-Thon is coming up October 19th-October 24th! This is one of the PTO’s biggest fund-raisers and a great opportunity to motivate your students to read. Read-a-Thon is new to F. AVE so here is how we will handle it in Mr. J's Reading Class:

Conferences This first conference will be an overview of where you student is and how we plan to help them grow. I'll be going over the initial diagnostic test results and some classwork that we've completed. Tybee Chaperones-Dads We have enough moms that are interested in going to Tybee to chaperone. We are in need of some brave dads to toss their hat in the ring. I do realize that it is rather early to try schedule this. If you think you'd be available just send me an email. Picture Day! We will be taking pictures Thursday, October 10 at 10:30 am. Fall Break Photos I told the students that if they had photos from Fall Break, that they may create a slideshow and I will give them some time to share it in class. This is not a formal assignment. This is a just a way for students to share their experience and to gain some public speaking experience in preparation for 5ht Grade Exhibition at the end of the school year.
