Greetings parents! I hope you all had a wonderful break. Below is a brief synopsis of our week.
Summatives We'll spend time Monday and Tuesday finishing summatives. If your student had to miss school the last couple of days of break this will be a time in which they get caught up. The summatives will be your weekly check in. I will send them home throughout the week as I grade them. Term 5 Topics Below are some of the topics we will be covering in Term 5:

There is a lot going on here at F.Ave. and here in Mr. Johnson's class.
Class Pet Unfortunately, this week our class pet, Savage, died. I changed his water and fed him that morning in normal fashion. Ten minutes after doing this, students noticed that he wasn't moving. He had passed away. I allowed the students to say kind words of over him before I disposed of his body. Some students were sad, some students didn't necessarily know how they should take it. If you haven't already, this may be a good time to have a 5th grade appropriate talk about mortality. I'll consider getting another fish over the break. I haven't made a final decision yet. I'll keep you posted. TED Talks and $1, 100 Grant We have yet to record our TED Talks. As an instructional designer, I can not bring myself to record and publish any video without decent audio and lighting. I did some research and found the PadCaster Studio. I wrote a grant to cover the cost and the Decatur Education Foundation has awarded us $1,100 to cover the cost of the PadCaster Studio and the apps to accompany our efforts. We'll also be using this for our Exhibition Projects at the end of the year. Book Fair Mr. Johnson's class will have our Book Fair Preview this Monday, February 6th.
