I hope you all had a great break! We are ready to hit the ground running in 2017!! We have already began by completing a science exploration and constructing our new Interactive Notebooks.
My Main Reflection During the break, I had time to reflect on my time with the students thus far. In my time of reflection it occurred to me that I need to give the students solid and consistent feedback weekly. This means that we will start taking (what may be a bad word in some our homes) weekly quizzes. Check-In Time! I have a layered perspective when it comes to quizzes because of the kind of culture over-quizzing can create in the classroom. I NEVER want to a have a "Gotcha!" culture. You know, the kind of class climate when a teacher purposely tried to "catch us slippin'" and sprang a pop quiz on the class the weekend after homecoming. LOL! This is why I am abandoning the word quiz and will call them "check-in's". I do believe this will help the students to keep track of their progress. This will also give parents an opportunity to get a handle on exactly what is going on in class. The check-in schedule will start next week as folloiws. Monday Check in results in Red Folder for parent/student review Math-Pre-Check-in Wednesday Math-Midweek Check-in Friday All Subject Areas-End of Week Check-In Admittedly, this is a very traditional approach to giving feedback. I do believe this will benefit the students as they monitor their own progress. I will not quiz the students (with the exception of the pre-check-in) on something that I have not yet covered. Feel free to email me with any thoughts.
